American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace - pure fiction or truth?

FX cable channel will start the second season of "American Crime Story." In the center of the plot - the murder of designer Gianni Versace. 

Before shooting

In fact, the second season of "American Crime Story" (the first dedicated to the cause of A. Jay Simpson, brought a team nine "Emmy" and two "Golden Globe"), director, screenwriter, executive producer Ryan Murphy and his longtime co-author Brad Falchuk planned to build around consequences of the hurricane "Katr ina". And only in the third we had to take up the book of the journalist Maureen Orth "Vulgar Favors" - the story of fashion designer Gianni Versace, who was shot in front of his villa. But, apparently, creators quickly realized that interest in the mysterious death of the legendary designer will reach its peak in  2017: on 15 July last year it had been almost 30 years since the tragedy, what did not fail to remind the press and Versace fashion house (after the death of Gianni Versace his older brother Santo and younger sister Donatella took care of it). It became clear th at it is better to release the series faster. For example, in January 2018.

In November 2016 the media's reported that Lady Gaga would play Donatella. Choice seeme d very logical: Murphy already had time to work with the singer on the set of his other show, "American Horror Story" ( the role of bloodsucking Countess in the fifth season as a result even brought Lady Gaga "Golden Globe"). Not to mention the fact that Gaga has repeatedly appeared as Signora Versace - say, in the advertising campaign four years ago.    Gaga calls Donatella her friend, regularly sends greetings via Instagram, and even wrote a song for the album ARTPOP «Donatella». Simply put, with the casting and, as a consequence, "access to the body" everything could have turned out very, very well. But it did not work out: a few months later Murphy himself has denied rumors of singer's participation in the series, pleading her heavy workload: Gaga's world tour with the album "Joanne" and shooting in the directorial debut of Bradley Cooper, "A Star is Born." But there is a suspicion that it was the first alarm bell. Close to the family Versace singer decided not to risk for the sake of friendship.

Book-enemy

Back in the late 1990s, when a multi-published investigation of Maureen Orth came out, Gianni's relatives were quick to call it "a collection of rumors and gossip." And no wonder! The journalist gave rise to the most bizarre theories. Hinted, for example, that 27-year-old Andrew Cunanan (in "History of Crime", played by Murphy's longtime muse Darren Criss), who made a living as a male hooker, could commit the offense, because the 50-year-old Versace (Venezuelan Edgar Ramirez) infected him with HIV.

Another theory was to ensure that the head of the founder of Versace has requested the Italian mafia - for debt or worse. By the way, there were another versions: for example, it was said that Versace's assassination was orchestrated by his own family, who wanted to undertake his business.

In the end, they found themselves at the top (Santo as CEO, Donatella - creative director), despite the fact that 50% of the company shares were held by a minor at the time Donatella's daughter Allegra, which Gianni loved as his own. We don't think Murphy will include this twist in the story, but the first two  (according to the plot of "Killing of Gianni Versace", the designer really infected with HIV) are enough to annoy brother and sister. It is not surprising that they have already made several statements condemning the creators of the series.

Family affair

Frankly, the Versace family (even without the controversial episode) - the dream of all screenwriters who are hungry for high rankings. What to say: Donatella struggled with addiction, Allegra, who inherited hundreds of millions of dollars - struggled with anorexia; In addition, Versace treated rather harshly his brother's lover Antonio D`Amiko, deprived of monthly pension in the amount of $ 26 thousand, of course, there were compensation, but much more modest.

But in the 20 years that have passed since the death of a loved one, Antonio could save six million-plus. The fact that the boyfriend appeared on the other side of Donatella and Santo's side, suggests another circumstance: D'Amico still met with Ricky Martin, although at first he criticized the project (especially - the footage from the set on which Gianni was dying in his arms).

Costume designers have been seriously put to the test: not having access to the archives of the Italian brand, Lou Eyrich and her team were forced to sew "collections", on which Gianni Versace worked for months, for a couple of days. Penelope Cruz, who performed the role of Donatella,  had to come to the premiere in StellaMcCartney dress. But the Spaniard - one of the unspoken Ambassadors of the brand, just last year wore four dresses of Atelier Versace on red carpet. Penelope has not got gloss covers - neither Vogue, nor Harper`s Bazaar wanted to advertise the show (after all, talking about the major advertisers). Only Spanish Elle put on Cruz Versace. However, their Versace - just earrings.
